Role of Meteorological Factors for the Development and Forecasting of Citrus Canker Disease in the Tarai Region of the Indo-Gangetic Plains

Citrus canker disease is a major biotic constraint in the production of citrus. The growth and development of Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri, the causal organism of citrus canker, is greatly affected by environmental factors. The various weather parameters have significant impacts on the host’s growth stage and susceptibility and on the pathogen’s survival, multiplication rate, and spread. Keeping this in view, the effect of environmental factors on disease severity was studied for the years 2014 and 2015 on citrus at the Horticultural Research Centre, Pantnagar, India. The investigation was carried out under natural conditions to establish the relationship between environmental factors and the development of citrus canker. Predicting the effect of weather parameters before the appearance of the disease can be adopted to manage the disease in a timely manner. The data demonstrated a strong positive relationship between rainfall and relative humidity with the percent disease index (PDI), whereas temperature and wind speed were negatively correlated with PDI in 2014 and 2015. Thus, temperature, relative humidity, rainfall, and wind speed play a significant role in epidemiology, hence disease severity is strongly related to weather conditions. The correlation and regression analyses between various weather parameters and disease severity have generated highly significant information that can be utilized in disease forecasting. This research would be helpful for farmers in applying adequate management strategies against citrus canker disease prior to the appearance of the disease.
