<p>Indian blackberry or <i>jamun</i> is an underutilized subtropical fruit crop indigenous to India. Over the past few years, the demand for this fruit has increased tremendously due to consumer awareness about its rich bioactive composition, antioxidant potential, and antidiabetic properties. However, due to high perishability, the fruit has a&#xa0;limited marketing window and suffers from huge postharvest losses. This study aimed to investigate the effect of a&#xa0;nitric oxide-enriched sodium alginate (NaAlg) coating on the postharvest quality and shelf life of <i>jamun</i>. Fruits were treated with sodium nitroprusside (SNP; 1.0, 2.0 mM) enriched NaAlg (1.0,&#xa0;2.0, 3.0%) coating and stored at 7 ± 1 °C. The study showed that the 1.0 mM SNP-enriched NaAlg (1%) coating was most effective in reducing fruit weight and decay losses compared to the control (distilled water treated). The loss of peel and pulp anthocyanins and membrane lipid peroxidation were significantly delayed by this treatment. The SNP (1.0 mM) + NaAlg (1%)-treated fruits also maintained the highest ascorbic acid, phenolics, antioxidant capacity, and radical-scavenging activity among the treatments. These fruits also showed higher total soluble solids and titratable acidity retention compared to the control. The results of the study may be helpful for prolonging the shelf life and improving the marketability of <i>jamun</i> fruit.</p>
