Assessment of Ascorbic Acid and Phytochemicals in Aonla Cultivars During Growth and Development Using HPLC

Aonla (Emblica officinalis), a significant medicinal plant cultivated in India, is valued for its high phenolic content and strong antioxidant properties. In the current study five potential cultivars were assessed for phenolic compounds using HPLC analysis at different growing stages. The ascorbic acid content was highest in December, with ‘NA-10’ exhibiting the maximum concentration (677.80 mg 100 g−1), followed by ‘Kanchan’ (518.56 mg 100 g−1). The total phenolic content peaked in October, with ‘Krishna’ recording the highest accumulation, followed by ‘Chakaiya’. In terms of specific phenolic compounds, ‘Krishna’ had the highest gallic acid (12.35 mg 100 g−1) in October, while ‘Chakaiya’ exhibited the maximum epicathechin (881.83 mg 100 g−1). ‘Kanchan’ recorded the highest catechin (327.92 mg 100 g−1) and caffeic acid (77.37 mg 100 g−1). In November, ‘Chakaiya’ had the highest chlorogenic acid (42.49 mg 100 g−1), whereas ‘NA-10’ contained the highest p‑coumaric acid (1.29 mg 100 g−1). In December, ‘Kanchan’ exhibited the highest ellagic acid (573.78 mg 100 g−1). These aonla cultivars serve as cost-effective and bio-available sources of polyphenols and ascorbic acid, exhibiting strong antioxidative potential. Some cultivars, particularly those rich in polyphenols, are well-suited for pharmaceutical and medicinal applications, while others may be more appropriate for processing and value addition.
