Simultaneous Analysis of Several Common Anions and Cations in 17 Hazelnut Varieties Grown in Giresun Province Using an Ion Chromatographic System and Statistical Assessment

Seventeen native hazelnut varieties and their shells grown in Giresun Province on the north coast of Türkiye (‘Çakıldak’, ‘Mincane’, ‘Cavcava’, ‘Kan’, ‘Yassıbadem’, ‘Yuvarlakbadem’, ‘Palaz’, ‘Foşa’, ‘Kuş’, ‘Uzunmusa’, ‘Sivri’, ‘Kargalak’, ‘Kalınkara’, ‘İncekara’, ‘Bolubadem’, ‘Boluyuvarlak’, ‘Tombul’) were analyzed for anionic (fluoride, chloride, nitrite, bromide, nitrate, phosphate, sulfate) and cationic (lithium, sodium, ammonium, potassium, magnesium, calcium) characteristics via a dual ion chromatography (IC) system. The greater potassium (‘Çakıldak’: 8845.45 ± 86.55 mg/kg) content in the shell than in the kernel (‘Çakıldak’: 6041.65 ± 0.42 mg/kg) is remarkable. Similarly, the sodium concentration in the shell (‘Kargalak’: 770.08 ± 2.51 mg/kg) was greater than that in the kernel (‘Tombul’: 574.79 ± 1.29 mg/kg). All groups (kernel–shell, anion–cation) were tested separately via statistical analysis. Some of the data were parametric (Levene test, p > 0.05), while some were nonparametric (Levene test, p < 0.05), and analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Kruskal–Wallis test were applied. Significant differences in the mean values were tested with Tukey’s test and the Mann–Whitney U test. This study is a specific study in which anion–cation analyses were performed via an IC system in 17 different species of hazelnut, which are very important, such as the kernel and shell. In this sense, shedding light on the literature is inevitable.
