Discovery of a new wintering pattern of the Eastern Great Bustard Otis tarda dybowskii in Mongolia
摘要
The Great Bustard Otis tarda (Linnaeus, 1758) is a globally threatened species widely distributed across the Eurasian steppe grasslands. Mongolia supports among the most important populations in Asia, particularly of the eastern subspecies O. t. dybowskii. However, the number of birds in the Mongolian population has not been reliably evaluated or regularly monitored. Here we present data from the first, extensive mid-winter surveys in Mongolia, covering more than 5000 km of road transects. Our results reveal that rather than migrating southwards as has been historically noted, an estimated 20% of the Great Bustard population in Mongolia now overwinters in northern and northeastern Mongolia. These overwintering birds are exclusively males. This change in migratory behavior of a significant portion of the breeding population requires the development of appropriate conservation measures. The most ubiquitous threats to the species in Mongolia during the winter include disturbance and competition for resources from large numbers of livestock, illegal hunting, collisions with powerlines, and disturbance from human activities, as the sites used are not protected by law. Further field work is required to identify and survey all potential wintering sites across the country, and cooperation with the private sector will be necessary to safeguard these birds in cultivated landscapes.
