Due to the exacerbated spatial heterogeneity of their environment, bird populations living in mountain landscapes may depend on their ability to develop flexible behavioral strategies in the way they use space and these elevational gradients. However, the way birds use elevational gradients to meet their needs is still poorly known. To fill this gap in the Rock Partridge (Alectoris graeca saxatilis), 88 individuals were radio-tracked in the south-western French Alps from 2012 to 2021, during breeding period. We measured the distance (planar and elevational) from the birds to their nesting site and compared birds that succeeded in their breeding attempt to those that failed. We found that birds that failed tended to move further away from the nest site, and to higher elevation, than birds with chicks, which slowly moved to higher elevations as they moved away from the nests. In this species, both parents incubate a clutch separately. Females seemed to travel further and higher in elevation than males in the case of reproductive failure. This variability in spatial behavior across the population is probably the result of individual’s adjustments to their environment to cover their needs or the needs of their broods, which seem to be different. Also, Rock Partridges are hunted in this area, with an annual assessment of the reproductive success to guide the harvest. Our results suggest an overestimation risk for this indicator as many failed breeders tend to leave monitoring areas. Fortunately, the number of individuals that can be harvested is ultimately calibrated to the population estimated at the end of the summer. On this basis, we suggest that all stakeholders carefully consider the potential influence of spatial behavior when implementing science-based management.
