<p>We present the breeding phenology and success of Red-billed Tropicbird (<i>Phaethon aethereus</i>) on Raso Islet, Cape Verde archipelago, in relation to the breeding of Cape Verde Shearwaters (<i>Calonectris edwardsii</i>), which can displace Red-billed Tropicbirds from nest cavities and kill eggs, chicks and even adults. Red-billed Tropicbirds laid mostly from October to January, with a peak of chicks in the nest in February/March, when Cape Verde Shearwaters return from migration to breed. When prospecting for nest-sites during March Cape Verde Shearwaters caused the death of about 1/3 of the chicks in the colony. Timing of breeding of Red-billed Tropicbirds on Raso may respond to two opposite selective forces: (1) a peak in food abundance that would favour breeding from February to May, and (2) nest site competition with Cape Verde Shearwaters that would favour breeding from October to February. An increasing nesting interference competition on the Red-billed Tropicbird by Cape Verde Shearwater is expected in the future as the population recovers following conservation measures.</p>
