<p>Endangered species may suffer from parasites due to their typically small populations, such as the critically endangered Araripe Manakin (<i>Antilophia bokermanni</i>). Its risk of infection is great, with only 150–700 individuals in &lt; 50 km<sup>2</sup> of humid forest enclaves in the Chapada do Araripe in the northeastern Brazilian state of Ceará. Haemosporidian parasites have a cosmopolitan distribution and so pose a serious threat. We captured birds from 6 May 2021 to 30 September 2022 (excluding&#xa0;October and November when they are breeding), collected blood samples and screened for haemosporidion parasites (Apicomplexa: Haemosporida) using PCR. None of the 65 individuals captured had evidence of <i>Plasmodium</i>, <i>Haemoproteus,</i> or <i>Leucocytozoon</i> infections<i>.</i> We explore some hypotheses to explain the absence of infections, and consider the implications for the conservation of this critically endangered species.</p>
