<p>Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) is often accompanied by a satellite RNA (satRNA), a short single-stranded noncoding RNA that depends on CMV for replication and encapsidation. Our Bayesian phylogenetic analysis estimated that the most recent common ancestor (MRCA) of satRNAs originated in the early 1900s, whereas the time of the MRCA of CMV dates back thousands of years. Thus, although satRNA is a molecular parasite of CMV, our analysis suggests that they did not coevolve. We propose that to some extent, host crops of CMV may have contributed to the de novo emergence of satRNA.</p>
