摘要

Otfrid Foerster is considered one of the most outstanding personalities in the neurosciences of the early twentieth century. Coming from the descriptive neurology of his Parisian apprenticeship, he pursued an analytical approach that led him into neurosurgery, which enabled him to gain a functional and topographical understanding of neurological diseases through stimulation and observation of stimulus responses. The resulting practical knowledge earned him a high international reputation and shaped the development of neurophysiology in the western world. It was only towards the end of his almost 20-year tenure as professor of neurology in Wroclaw that his long-cherished dream of a modern neurological institute combining patient care and basic research could be realized.
