Equisetum hyemale enhances local bone regeneration in murine maxillary defects: an in vivo study

We investigated a maxillary bone defect model to test a synthetic extracellular matrix (HyStem®-HP) (hyaluronan) alone or associated with BG-Carb (BG-Carb)—a bioactive glass-carbon material made of a green waste (Equisetum hyemale). BG-Carb cytocompatibility was evaluated in Dental Pulp Cells (DPC) at 24, 48, and 72 h. Animals were treated with both materials and euthanized on days 7 and 21. The inflammatory process, bone regeneration, and epithelial formation were quantified. Data were analyzed at a 95% confidence level using Student’s t-test or Mann Whitney test (p < 0.05). BG-Carb did not impair dental pulp cell viability. BG-Carb also promoted increased bone formation at 7 days compared to HyStem®-HP alone. At 21 days, bone formation was similar between groups; however, less granulation tissue and greater epithelial thickness were observed in the BG-Carb-treated samples. BG-Carb showed biocompatibility promoting early bone regeneration and tissue organization during repair. BG-Carb is a promise candidate for bone regeneration.
