<p>We give an exhaustive presentation of the concept of topological orientation for Fredholm maps of index zero between real Banach manifolds introduced by the first and third authors during the last three years of the twentieth century. An application of this orientation to the construction of the degree introduced by the same two authors will be given at the end of the paper.</p>
