Sebastapistes monospina, a new species of scorpionfish (Teleostei: Scorpaenidae) from the South Pacific Ocean

The new scorpionfish species Sebastapistes monospina, distributed in tropical/subtropical south Pacific waters from Lord Howe Island east to the Pitcairn Islands, closely resembles Sebastapistes perplexa Motomura, Aizawa and Endo 2014, which is restricted to the temperate waters of Japan. Both species share several morphological characteristics, including fusion of the first and second suborbital ridges into a single ridge (complete with a suborbital spine), absence of a lateral lacrimal ridge or spine, scaleless opercular spines, presence of palatine teeth, poorly developed interorbital ridges with a shallow inter-ridge channel, absence of an occipital pit, undeveloped coronal spines, and lack of accessory spines along the anterior and posterior lacrimal spines. However, S. monospina is differentiated from the latter by the presence of predominantly cycloid scales (vs. ctenoid scales in S. perplexa), absence of darker pigmentation on the subopercle and pectoral-fin base (vs. distinct dark blotches visible even in preserved specimens), and presence of canine-like teeth in both jaws (vs. entirely villiform teeth). Additional features of Sebastapistes monospina include 15 or 16 (mode 16) pectoral-fin rays, 22 or 23 (23) pored lateral-line scales, 44–46 (45) scale rows in longitudinal series, 5 or 6 (5) scale rows above and 10 or 11 (11) below lateral line, 5 or 6 (6) scale rows between sixth dorsal-fin spine base and lateral line, 5 or 6 (5) scale rows between last dorsal-fin spine base and lateral line, 4 or 5 (4) predorsal scale rows, and 14–16 (14) gill rakers.
