<p>Digital payment systems, including QR-based payment, are increasingly integrated into public transportation to improve efficiency and interoperability. However, inclusivity challenges remain, particularly across generations. This study applies the extended Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT2) as a contextual and exploratory framework to examine generational differences in QR-based payment adoption in Greater Jakarta’s public transport system. Data were drawn from the 2023 Jabodetabek Commuter Survey and complemented by in-depth interviews with users representing Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z. Findings reveal that Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z display a similarly high level of digital exposure and familiarity with smartphone-based services, while Baby Boomers demonstrate lower and more selective usage of QR-based payments, despite relatively moderate smartphone ownership. These patterns point to uneven digital adoption trajectories, rather than a uniform digital transition. The findings also suggest that habitual mobility behavior and prior QR usage in other contexts do not necessarily translate into habitual use of QR-based payments in public transport, where transaction speed, reliability, and infrastructure conditions are critical. QR-based payment is therefore primarily used as an alternative rather than as the main payment method across cohorts in public transport. The interview highlights an interesting role of intergenerational support, particularly “reverse mentoring”, in facilitating initial exposure to QR-based payment system among older users, while sustained use remains shaped by system design and situational demands. Overall, this study highlights the importance of context-sensitive design and inclusive implementation strategies in developing digital payment systems for urban public transport across diverse generational groups.</p>
