<p>This study evaluated whether the multimedia kiosk interfaces in 7-Eleven (i-bon) and FamilyMart (FAMIPort) met the operational needs of elderly users, with a focus on universal design principles. The research aims to enhance the usability of these systems by reducing visual fatigue, improving readability, and fostering a more user-friendly experience tailored to the well-being of elderly individuals. Using questionnaires based on a five-point Likert scale and statistical analysis through SPSS t-tests, the study identifies significant differences between the two systems, except for the “error-tolerance correction design,” which showed low recognizability. The findings revealed that elderly users strongly preferred the FamilyMart system due to its minimal text, intuitive graphic designs, larger button sizes, and clearer homepage layout, all of which align with universal design principles. To further evaluate the usability differences between the existing systems and an improved design, 15 elderly participants were asked to complete specific tasks using the original multimedia kiosk interfaces while their completion times were recorded. Based on the results, an optimized interface was designed, incorporating universal design and ergonomic principles. The same 15 participants then performed identical tasks using the redesigned interface, and their completion times were re-recorded. The results indicated that the modified interface significantly reduced task completion time compared to the original versions, demonstrating improved usability and efficiency.
