<p>Understanding the importance of the dispersal of planktonic organisms for structuring communities has been one of the main objectives of ecological studies in rivers affected by dam construction. In a cascade of reservoirs, planktonic diversity in the main axis may be influenced by the upstream reservoir inflow and the tributaries. This study aimed to investigate the zooplankton community structure along a cascade of reservoirs in the Tocantins River, assessing the contribution of tributaries and upstream reservoirs to species composition and abundance. Zooplankton richness and abundance were analyzed in three reservoirs using data collected from 20 sampling stations over different seasonal periods. Beta diversity analysis was employed to assess community structure dissimilarities across three regions: i) between tributaries and the main axis of the reservoirs, ii) between sampling stations located exclusively along the main axis, and iii) between the tributaries themselves. Results revealed the highest beta diversity between tributaries and the main axis, particularly during the rainy season, while the lowest beta diversity values were observed between main axis sampling stations, mainly for rotifers and microcrustaceans. Our results demonstrate the prevalence of longitudinal dispersal along a cascade of reservoirs.</p>
