摘要

This study proposes a new way of utilizing industrial solid waste streams generated from the automotive manufacturing industries. Specifically, brick units were made using automotive scrap sheet metal in the shape of offals to demonstrate ease of manufacturability while retaining desirable mechanical properties typically lost upon recycling. The fabricated metal brick units were thermally characterized and compared with a traditional standard fired-clay brick wall of comparable dimensions. Galvanized steel (GS) and clay brick walls were compared under steady state and transient heating and cooling conditions. Results indicate that the effective thermal conductivity for the clay brick wall is lower than that of the GS brick wall. However, the GS brick wall exhibits a faster thermal response under both heating and cooling conditions, which make GS bricks suitable for residential and commercial applications. In summary, by embracing emerging circular economy principles, a new way of reusing galvanized steel offals with minimal modifications for GS brick making has been validated; thus avoiding energy intensive manufacturing processes.
