Perceptions of waste management: implications for a rural community management model
摘要
The study focuses on waste management in rural communities without adequate public services. The objective was to understand the environmental perceptions of four rural communities in the municipality of Coyuca de Benítez, Guerrero, regarding waste management and to propose a participatory management model. Participatory action research methods, including surveys and interviews, and analytical tools such as descriptive statistics and social network analysis were used to assess social perceptions and relationships around waste management. The results indicate that although there is a high level of awareness of environmental issues, active participation in waste management is limited due to a lack of infrastructure and educational resources. Significant interest in participating in activities such as environmental education workshops on waste management was observed, especially among women. Differences in environmental perceptions and concerns across communities were also noted. Among the main conclusions was the need to implement environmental education programs adapted to local needs, empowering communities and promoting an inclusive approach, recognizing the role of women as key actors in environmental protection.
