Young people in Canada feel worried and hopeless about climate change: a national cross-sectional survey

Climate change evokes complex emotions among young people. Significant gaps remain in our understanding of climate emotions, particularly regarding their prevalence and severity among young people. We examined the prevalence, severity, distribution, and sociodemographic associations of emotional responses to climate change among young people (13–34 years old) in Canada. This study is part of a larger cross-sectional survey that recruited and interviewed participants through multi-stage, multi-stratified random sampling from April 2022 to March 2023 (young people subgroup: n = 409). Data were population-weighted and analyzed using descriptive statistics, factor analyses, and multivariable regression analyses. We identified two distinct categories of emotional responses to climate change, worry and hopelessness, with most young people in Canada experiencing at least mild levels of both (95.1% and 87.7% respectively). Between genders, strong hopelessness was most prevalent among nonbinary respondents (63.6%), whereas strong worry was most prevalent among women (19.4%). Regionally, Nunavut had the highest prevalence of strong hopelessness (50.0%), whereas Alberta and Yukon had the highest prevalence of strong worry (37.7% and 38.1% respectively). Additionally, strong emotional responses were more common among urban respondents (hopelessness = 29.8%; worry = 20.3%) and those with the highest annual household income (hopelessness = 31.7%; worry = 28.8%). The severity of climate emotions was significantly higher among gender nonbinary respondents (hopelessness and worry), urban respondents (worry), those with the highest annual household income (worry), and in some provinces and territories. Collectively, our results highlight the widespread presence of climate emotions among young people in Canada, and the nuanced ways in which sociodemographic factors are associated with their emotional responses to climate change.
