<p>We use highly granular open access geolocated data (as of May 2025) to perform a spatial analysis of accessibility of public electric vehicle charging stations, and we provide a detailed quantitative analysis of factors driving the presence (absence) of public charging stations. Should the charging infrastructure become a solid driving factor of electric vehicle adoption, public agents need to find and agree upon an optimal spatial pattern of charging point distribution, and a convenient mix of charging options (slow and high-speed). Among the eight Central European countries analyzed, we find a relatively sparse and spatially uneven presence of public chargers, with current public infrastructure mostly supporting long-range transportation with focus on high-speed charging. We find a substantial gap in public charging infrastructure designed for low-speed (workplace, overnight) charging, which could be used by households lacking the access to private (in-house) charging.</p>
