Correlation between Parkinson’s disease subtypes and plasma uric acid/neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio

This study investigated the relationship between motor subtypes of Parkinson’s disease (PD) and plasma uric acid (UA) levels, as well as the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), to explore potential biomarkers.
MethodsSeventy-three PD patients admitted between January 2021 to December 2023 were categorized into tremor-dominant (TD) and non-tremor-dominant (NTD) groups based on their motor subtypes. General patient characteristics, blood uric acid (UA) levels, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and inflammatory markers tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were compared. Spearman’s analysis explored the relationships between motor subtypes, UA, NLR, and inflammatory markers.
ResultsNo significant differences were found between groups in age, sex, disease duration, levodopa equivalent daily dose (LEDD), education, Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), or rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD) prevalence (p > 0.05). The NTD group showed higher Hoehn-Yahr (H-Y) stage, non-tremor scores, Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD), Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA), and prevalence of freezing of gait, while the TD group had higher tremor scores (p < 0.05). NTD patients had lower uric acid and higher NLR (p < 0.05). UPDRS, uric acid, and NLR were associated with motor subtypes (r = 0.335, -0.850, 0.313; all p < 0.05). TNF-α and IL-6 were elevated in the NTD group (p < 0.01).
ConclusionThe study highlights significant correlations between PD motor subtypes, UA levels, and NLR, suggesting their potential as biomarkers for distinguishing PD motor subtypes and shedding light on the disease’s clinical and pathophysiological aspects.
