Objectives <p>Civil protection constitutes an fundamental component of emergency response in Germany. Natural disasters, which frequently impact extensive regions, present challenges for medical disaster control units. Due to the unpredictability and intricacy of the events, adequate preparation is challenging. The #KontUR2023 disaster control exercise simulated such an event. The objective of this study was to evaluate novel strategies and concepts for the further development of medical disaster control.</p> Methods <p>A&#xa0;survey was conducted among the command unit members of the #KontUr2023 exercise. The participants were asked to identify problems and optimisation potential in ten predefined key areas.</p> Results <p>Twenty operational managers participated in the study. The results revealed that standardisation of structures between the aid organisations and the use of digital solutions to create situation maps enabled simultaneous use by several managers and mobile access via tablets. The analysis also identified areas for enhancement in resource management, with the potential for greater efficiency through standardisation of radio call names and the registration of helpers using QR codes or analogous digital solutions. The study yielded valuable insights into command communication, with the utilisation of command assistants, prompt radio channel separation, the employment of advance commands for reconnaissance, and the assessment of the situation on site, along with satellite communication, contributing to more efficient management of the damage situation.</p> Conclusion <p>In the context of large-scale disaster control scenarios, emergency response is significantly complicated. Establishment of effective communication and command structures is a&#xa0;critical component of successful incident command. Continuous enhancement of existent structures and integration of novel digital technologies can facilitate the operation of incident command and enhance disaster management over time.</p>
