Background <p>In recent years, the German emergency medical service (EMS) has increasingly reached its limits due to the growing number of deployments, particularly in low-priority areas. Compensating the increased demand by increasing the provision of conventional emergency vehicles no longer appears to be effective. Alternative components of care, such as nonphysician triage and treatment systems, are intended to alleviate the burden and ensure more targeted EMS deployment in the future.</p> Methods <p>In November 2023, a&#xa0;systematic internet research was conducted, focusing on publications related to nonphysician triage and treatment systems. Additionally, a&#xa0;questionnaire was sent to the identified EMS that have implemented such systems in order to create a&#xa0;consistent basis for comparison.</p> Results <p>Five systems were identified in Germany; four of them are currently in operation. The implementations took place between 2019 and 2023. There are differences in the duration of the projects and in the basic design (personnel deployment, training course, operating time, indications for deployment). Significant effects, such as reductions in transport rates and inpatient admissions, were identified.</p> Conclusion <p>The increased nonemergency-related deployment of EMS in prehospital care and the current situation in the care system (e.g., shortage of skilled workers, availability in outpatient care) requires efficient use of available resources. Nonphysician sighting systems provide an alternative to respond to the increasing and changing patient needs. National and international studies have shown that such systems can reduce the burden on preclinical and clinical care.</p>

Background

In recent years, the German emergency medical service (EMS) has increasingly reached its limits due to the growing number of deployments, particularly in low-priority areas.
