Using pumping tests to understand how sea proximity and karstification influence the hydraulics of a coastal karstic aquifer in the Yucatan Peninsula
摘要
Hydrodynamics in coastalkarst aquifers is complex, and its study requires a combination of techniques (i.e., geophysics, speleology, hydrogeochemistry, and tracer tests). The coastal karst aquifer of Quintana Roo, Mexico, has been extensively studied using several methods; however, the extent of its hydraulic connection with the sea under pumping and injection regimes is unknown. In recent years, pressure tests, commonly applied to oilfields, have also been used on aquifers and offer an alternative approach to study aquifer behaviour. Four pumping tests with an 18-h duration were conducted in this study area. Detailed aquifer geometry and hydro-stratigraphy were obtained through borehole drilling. The tidal signal was detected during monitoring the pumping test, which was filtered to analyse the drawdown behaviour using the drawdown derivative diagnosis technique. Results revealed that this aquifer possesses a double porosity and, under a pumping regime, is highly influenced by the sea because it shows a connection with a constant head boundary, possibly related to sea proximity, after 200 to 700 min of pumping. Concerning hydro-stratigraphy, a continuous fractured system was identified during drilling, representing the preferential zone of connection between the coastal karst aquifer and the sea.
