<p>This paper provides a&#xa0;primer on the use of OpenStreetMap as a&#xa0;potential source of contextual geographic information for augmentation with survey data, focusing on methodological opportunities and limitations as well as mapping general OSM data wrangling methodology. We present an overview of the research opportunities offered by OpenStreetMap by discussing the state-of-the-art applications that combine OSM with other data sources, coming from a&#xa0;diverse range of social scientific disciplines to demonstrate what research questions can be tackled and how. We outline methodological opportunities and focus on technical (i.e., accessing OSM data, pinpointing data linkage units and pre-processing OSM data) and substantive (i.e., OSM data quality) aspects, aiming to sketch OSM data wrangling methodology for survey research. Likewise, we highlight potential geoprivacy-related ethical considerations, given the sensitivity of survey responses combined with OpenStreetMap data.</p>
