<p>Worm gears are typically used in applications where a&#xa0;high transmission ratio is required in a&#xa0;small installation space. Furthermore, the use of this type of gearbox enables low-vibration and low-noise operation. A&#xa0;typical type of damage that can be observed in worm gear boxes is pitting damage. Here, material breaks out of the tooth flank surface of the less load carrying contact partner (usually the bronze worm wheel). Previous calculation approaches acc. to ISO/TS&#xa0;14521 [<CitationRef CitationID="CR1">1</CitationRef>] with regard to pitting damage are insufficiently accurate and therefore less meaningful [<CitationRef CitationID="CR2">2</CitationRef>]. As part of the study presented here experimental tests are carried out on worm gear test rigs in order to examine the duration of pitting damages more precisely for more modern bronze materials. Here, a&#xa0;significant influence of the contact stress and the sliding velocity on the duration of pitting can be determined.</p>
