<p>The efficient design of hull shapes with high propulsive performance in wind and waves requires methods of estimating external forces with a high degree of accuracy. One of the estimation methods is the use of model tests, which have thus far ensured the accuracy of the test results through procedures in accordance with the quality management standards of the respective organisations. The OCTARVIA Project, a joint research project by 25 Japanese organisations, including shipping companies, shipyards and others, has harmonised these procedures in a comprehensive manner and created standardised procedures for testing and analysis. To validate the procedures, tank test results obtained by several institutes using the same physical ship models were compared and showed that the added resistance in waves can be estimated with sufficient accuracy for practical use if the tank test and analysis procedures developed by the OCTARVIA Project are followed. The tank tests were carried out using publicly available benchmark hull forms, which can also be used as validation data for numerical simulations of resistance in waves.</p>
