Perioperative Hitzeschutzmaßnahmen bei steigenden Sommertemperaturen und deren Bedeutung für die Gefäßchirurgie

Rising summer temperatures due to climate change pose particular challenges in (vascular) surgery for perioperative management. Vulnerable patient groups with cardiovascular comorbidities are at an increased risk of dehydration, wound infections, atherothrombotic events, as well as cardiovascular and renal complications under heat stress.
This article provides an overview of the body’s physiological responses to heat stress and describes their clinical consequences. Pre-, intra-, and postoperative measures are presented to reduce risks, such as optimal hydration, medication management, air conditioning in the operating room, and close monitoring. In addition, structural heat protection measures such as green facades, sun protection systems, and modern room air conditioning are essential to ensure a safe and sustainable hospital environment in the long term.
An integrative approach that combines individual patient needs, technical solutions, and organizational strategies is crucial to minimize perioperative complications and ensure the quality of care in a changing environment.
