<p>Pain is as an unpleasant sensory experience that is an inherent problem in vascular medicine, especially in perioperative vascular surgery and in arterial occlusive disease. The German Society of Vascular Medicine and Surgery has published work in this area and has also actively participated in the development of different guidelines. The S3 guideline of the German Society of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine, called “Treatment of acute and perioperative pain”, was published in 2021 and focusses on pharmacological aspects and pain management. The guideline of the German Pain Society is currently in the consultation phase and focusses on pain management, complex situations as geriatric multimorbidity, assessment, screening and special aspects in individuals with cognitive impairments.</p>
