Background <p>Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a&#xa0;chronic disease associated with rising treatment and follow-up costs. Individual patient circumstances and the use of conservative treatment options are key aspects of disease management. Although disease management programs (DMP) exist for conditions such as coronary heart disease (CHD) and diabetes mellitus, so far no specific DMP is available for PAD. It remains unclear whether PAD meets the criteria for such a&#xa0;program.</p> Objectives <p>To assess the current quality of care for patients with PAD and development of a specific DMP to optimize outpatient care.</p> Material and methods <p>A&#xa0;literature search was carried out in PubMed and the Cochrane Library that identified 42&#xa0;articles of which 12&#xa0;relevant studies were analyzed. Additional current articles were included for a&#xa0;narrative review. A&#xa0;LinkedIn-based survey (25 October–25 November 2022) as part of a&#xa0;master’s thesis collected responses from 41&#xa0;of 97&#xa0;invited participants on outpatient care for PAD. Based on these findings and analogous to the DMP for type&#xa0;II diabetes, a&#xa0;concept for a DMP specific for PAD was developed.</p> Results <p>The literature review revealed potential for improvement of outpatient care and highlighted undertreatment, particularly among women. Approximately 70% of the respondents were in favor of regular screening, with 92.2% endorsing measurement of the ankle brachial index (ABI). Smoking cessation programs were considered important by 90%, although satisfaction with current options was low. Additionally, 51.2% criticized the availability of vascular exercise groups. Overall, 75.6% of respondents supported the implementation of a&#xa0;DMP specific for PAD.</p> Conclusion <p>The findings underline the need for an independent DMP for PAD for optimization of outpatient care. An evaluation based on Federal Joint Committee (G-BA) and Social Security Code V (SGB&#xa0;V) criteria yielded positive results.</p>

Background

Individual patient circumstances and the use of conservative treatment options are key aspects of disease management. Although disease management programs (DMP) exist for conditions such as coronary heart disease (CHD) and diabetes mellitus, so far no specific DMP is available for PAD. It remains unclear whether PAD meets the criteria for such a program.

Objectives

To assess the current quality of care for patients with PAD and development of a specific DMP to optimize outpatient care.

Material and methods

A literature search was carried out in PubMed and the Cochrane Library that identified 42 articles of which 12 relevant studies were analyzed. Additional current articles were included for a narrative review. A LinkedIn-based survey (25 October–25 November 2022) as part of a master’s thesis collected responses from 41 of 97 invited participants on outpatient care for PAD. Based on these findings and analogous to the DMP for type II diabetes, a concept for a DMP specific for PAD was developed.
