<p>The present overview describes mediators and immunological tumor-defense mechanisms and their target structures that are relevant for current clinical applications in cancer immunotherapy or are likely to gain relevance in the near future. The focus is on antibody- and T‑cell-based procedures both for active therapies, in which the body’s own immune system is recruited, and passive strategies, in which immune effectors are substituted from outside. A&#xa0;major challenge for all disciplines involved is to manage the use of the various therapeutic procedures on a&#xa0;rational basis. The core areas of current developments are highlighted.</p>
