Empowerment durch PROM: der Kontext ist entscheidend für die Wirksamkeit
摘要
Consideration of patient-reported outcomes (PROs) and measures to empower patients (empowerment) promote patient-centeredness in the healthcare system. We were interested in the conditions that facilitate empowerment in the context of PRO measures (PROM).
Materials and methodsThematic literature search and reflection on our own research and experience.
ResultsPatient empowerment is a multidimensional process that requires sufficient information, communication skills, and an environment that promotes participation. A PRO survey strengthens the respondents in their role as self-experts. PRO surveys contribute to empowerment in particular if the introductory texts emphasize the importance of self-expertise and if the respondents are aware of the meaning and their own benefit of self-disclosure. Accompanying brochures, peer support and training of professionals can reinforce the effect. Accompanying question prompts (QP), which are specifically tailored to the PROs collected and the resulting patient concerns and counselling needs, have proven to be effective in supporting empowerment.
ConclusionsWhen implementing PROs into routine practice, it is essential to embed the patient self-assessment questionnaires in order to utilize the opportunity for empowerment. In preparation for planned professional discussions, it is advisable to combine the PRO survey with an adapted QP list.
