Theranostics enables individualized and more precise treatment by combining diagnosis and targeted therapy using molecular targets. In recent years, the development of new radiopharmaceuticals known as tracers has progressed exponentially, including the use of different radionuclides. Several United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA)- and European Medicines Agency (EMA)-approved radiopharmaceuticals are now available for the theranostics of neuroendocrine neoplasia and advanced prostate cancer. In current clinical trials, the therapeutic sequence and potential combinations with other treatments are under investigation. Established molecular targets can also be used for theranostics of other tumor entities. Recent theranostic research focuses on fibroblast-activation protein (FAP), the CXC motif chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4), CA19‑9, or integrin αvβ3, among other things. Further targets await translation from preclinical research in oncology and immunology.
