<p>Psychological distress and mental health symptoms in sports can manifest as both sport-specific and non-sport-specific disorders. These conditions can impair performance, elevate the risk of physical injury, and prolong the rehabilitation process. Unrecognized or inadequately treated mental disorders can have serious health consequences for athletes. Given the expanding relevance of sports psychiatry, this article provides a comprehensive overview of the dynamic processes in competitive sports. The interactions between mental health, pressure, training load, performance, and injuries are described. Particular emphasis is placed on identifying risk factors and examining psychological reactions to sports injuries and their long-term consequences. Furthermore, the requirements for structured psychiatric diagnosis as well as specialized treatment options in sports are evaluated. The presentation underscores the necessity of interprofessional cooperation between sports psychiatry and sports medicine. The goal is to establish interdisciplinary management that ensures holistic athlete care through coordinated tandem concepts.</p>
