Global research trends on climate change-induced heat stress and its impacts on health and productivity of outdoor workers: a systematic review

The escalating effects of climate change have increased the risk of heat stress for outdoor workers, particularly in low- and middle-income nations. This research offers a bibliometric and thematic overview of peer-reviewed literature from 2011 to 2024, concentrating on global trends, risk elements, assessment methods, and control measures related to occupational heat stress. Utilizing SCOPUS data alongside keyword co-occurrence analysis, country-wise distribution, and thematic mapping, the study reveals a notable growth in scholarly focus on this topic especially in high-risk industries such as agriculture and construction. The key findings indicate that factors like individual vulnerability, extreme environmental conditions, organizational dynamics, and insufficient protective measures collectively heighten heat-related hazards. The review notes a shift in methodology from exclusively using meteorological data to a more comprehensive approach that includes physiological, behavioral, and perceptual information. Control strategies are increasingly organized across individual, managerial, and engineering dimensions; however, their application remains inconsistent and is largely lacking in informal sectors. Importantly, there are significant research deficiencies in gender-sensitive studies, the long-term effects of exposure, and economic evaluations of productivity losses due to heat. This study provides a thorough compilation of current knowledge while suggesting a strategic framework for future inquiry, policy formulation, and adaptive actions.
