Climate resilience wheat: the climatic factors, plant responses, policies, and mitigation strategies perspective

Wheat is cultivated extensively as a major crop, providing food to approximately 20% of the global population. Its yield is affected by unexpected environmental alterations caused by climate change. These alterations may include differences in temperature, rainfall patterns, and atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. For example, elevated temperature throughout the reproductive phase and endosperm development, water stress during seed germination, and changing precipitation patterns during the growth period are shown to have adverse effects on wheat yield. These impacts vary across regions and are influenced by local conditions. To tackle these threats to food security, introducing climate-resilient wheat cultivars is of utmost importance. Mitigation strategies, including selecting ideal wheat ideotypes, implementing multi-trait selection, and managing evapotranspiration, are essential for ensuring sustainable crop production. Moreover, the integration of innovative technologies such as precision agriculture, genome editing, and molecular breeding-based crop cultivars is required. Apart from that, changes in government policies and adaptation measures are needed to incorporate into farming practices, such as adjustments in cropping practices and management. This review paper aims to examine the latest scientific research on how climate change affects wheat yield and what adaptive techniques might be applied to mitigate these effects.
