<p>Local Climate Zone (LCZ) is a classification framework related to urban morphology and land use. It was originally proposed for urban heat islands (UHIs) study, and has since been widely applied in more fields and plays an increasingly important role, such as urban ventilation, thermal comfort, air quality, and energy consumption. Despite this, the application trend of LCZ concept remains unclear, necessitating a thorough investigation into its specific application dynamics. This study uses the Web of Science Core Collection to conduct a bibliometric review of relevant literature on LCZ applications from 2012 to 2023. It aims to reveal the research progress, application fields, and future development trends of LCZ, thereby providing a comprehensive review of its applications across various fields. The results show that 895 scientific research institutions and 2,189 scholars from 73 countries and regions globally have participated in LCZ application-related studies. And 696 research papers covering multiple fields were produced and published in 160 journals, demonstrating the cross-field application potential of the LCZ concept. The application trend of the LCZ concept can be divided into three stages: (1) From 2012 to 2015, it was used for the monitoring, assessment, and simulation of UHIs; (2) From 2016 to 2019, its application expanded to include air quality, soil water dynamics, land use changes, urban drought characteristics, cold island effect, microclimate, heatwave risk and wind island effect studies. (3) Since 2020, LCZ has been more widely used, covering building energy simulation, urban cold wall effect, greening, precipitation and climate simulation and other broader fields. The results of this study can contribute to a deeper understanding of the current application status of LCZ across different fields and its future developmental potentials.</p>
