Twenty years of UV index measurement in Novi Sad, Serbia

This study presents 20 years (from May 2003 to April 2023) of ultraviolet (UV) index measurements in Novi Sad, Serbia, using a Yankee Environmental System (YES) UVB- 1 pyranometer. Measurements were taken every 30 s, averaged over 10-min intervals, and stored in a database. This analysis mainly focuses on maximum daily UV (maxUV) index values and their long-term trends. The mean maxUV index value from May 2003 to April 2023 was 4.18, with a standard deviation of 2.81. A statistically significant positive maxUV index trend of 4.2% per decade (p < 0.05) was detected. The ground-based YES UVB- 1 pyranometer measurements were compared with Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) satellite-derived local noon UV index values. Since the maxUV index does not always occur at local noon, a 30-min average of the UV index at local noon was calculated. This adjustment significantly improved agreement with OMI, reducing discrepancies related to differences in temporal sampling. To address data gaps caused by instrument calibration, maintenance, and technical issues, an existing empirical UV index model was adopted for Novi Sad that can be used to reconstruct missing maxUV index values.
