Characteristics of thermal comfort for the elderly in urban parks during autumn: a case study in cold regions

To further elucidate the characteristics and influencing factors of autumn thermal comfort among elderly individuals in urban parks situated in cold regions, this study combines microclimate measurement methods with thermal comfort investigations. It analyzes the relationship between outdoor thermal sensation and perceived thermal comfort among elderly individuals, defining evaluation criteria for elderly thermal comfort based on three aspects: thermoneutral physiological equivalent temperature (PET), the PET range representing thermal acceptability, and preferred PET. The study also explores the influence of microclimate factors on the thermal comfort of elderly individuals. The results indicate that in urban parks in cold areas during autumn, elderly individuals display increased heat tolerance and reduced cold tolerance compared to non-elderly individuals. The thermoneutral PET for the elderly is 6.9℃, whereas it is 10.1℃ for non-elderly individuals. The thermally acceptable PET range is 4.6–25.3℃ for the elderly, and 7.2–22.1℃ for non-elderly individuals. The preferred PET is 25.5℃ for the elderly and 24.3℃ for non-elderly individuals. The relative influence of microclimate factors on the thermal sensation of the elderly ranges from large to small: globe temperature, wind speed, and relative humidity.
