<p>The association of household pesticide exposure with Parkinson’s disease has been less explored than occupational exposure. Using data from the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative and the Fox Insight study, we analyzed the association between household pesticide exposure and the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease, as well as the age at onset. We analyzed data from 2,847 individuals with Parkinson’s disease and 385 healthy controls. The odds of developing Parkinson’s disease were two times higher in people with high use of household herbicides (adjusted OR = 1.95, 95% CI 1.14–3.32, p = 0.014) and any pesticides (adjusted OR = 1.83, 95% CI 1.16–2.89, p = 0.008). Also, a higher use of household herbicides (adjusted OR = 1.13, 95% CI 1.00–1.27, p = 0.038) and any pesticides (adjusted OR = 1.11, 95% CI 1.00–1.23, p = 0.033) before the age of 35&#xa0;years old was associated with higher odds of developing early-onset PD. High household exposure to herbicides and other pesticides may increase the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease and lead to an earlier onset of the disease.</p>
