<p>The genus&#xa0;<i>Microtoena</i>&#xa0;encompasses 19 species, primarily distributed in central, southern, and south-eastern China, and nearby countries in the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot.&#xa0;The Indian endemic <i>Microtoena griffithii</i>, an overlooked species since first described in 1890, has recently been synonymised under&#xa0;<i>M. moupinensis</i>&#xa0;based on herbarium studies. However, recent botanical explorations to north-eastern India have enabled the collection of this critically endangered species. Examining live specimens has allowed the reinstatement of <i>M. griffithii</i> to species status. The present study provides a detailed morphological analysis supported by botanical illustrations, description, palynological data, and notes on the distribution and status. To understand the current systematic position of this species and the closely similar&#xa0;<i>M. moupinensis</i>, we also conducted a molecular analysis with two chloroplast markers (<i>trn</i>H<i>-psb</i>A, <i>rps</i>16).</p>

Re-establishment of the overlooked species Microtoena griffithii (Lamiaceae) based on morphological and molecular data

摘要

The genus Microtoena encompasses 19 species, primarily distributed in central, southern, and south-eastern China, and nearby countries in the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot. The Indian endemic Microtoena griffithii, an overlooked species since first described in 1890, has recently been synonymised under M. moupinensis based on herbarium studies. However, recent botanical explorations to north-eastern India have enabled the collection of this critically endangered species.
