摘要

The study aimed to determine the effect of dichlorvos, a pesticide linked to reproductive disorders, on the oestrous cycle and ovarian hormones of Wistar rats. Twenty-one adult female rats were divided into three groups, comprising seven rats each. Group A served as control, while groups B and C received 4.45 mg/kg and 8.9 mg/kg of dichlorvos orally for six cycles. The stages of oestrous, oestrous index and ratio, length of oestrous cycle, and serum estradiol/progesterone levels were determined. There was a significant (p < 0.05) decrease in proestrus and metestrus stages but an increase in the oestrus stages between the dichlorvos-treated groups and the control. The diestrus stage of group B significantly (p < 0.05) increased, while group C decreased. The proestrus and metestrus indices of the dichlorvos-treated groups, as well as the diestrus index of group C, decreased compared to the control. Conversely, the oestrus index of the dichlorvos-treated group and the diestrus index of group B increased. There was a significant (p < 0.05) dose-dependent increase in the oestrous cycle ratio compared to the control. The length of the oestrous cycle gradually decreased as the cycle progressed, but was only significantly (p < 0.05) from the 3rd cycle. The estradiol and progesterone levels significantly (p < 0.05) increased and decreased in dichlorvos-treated groups, respectively, although the progesterone level of group B was not significantly (p > 0.05) different from the others. The study shows that dichlorvos disrupts the oestrous cycle and ovarian hormones in Wistar rats.
