Comparative evaluation of the sensitivity and reliability of clinical biomarkers of acute renal failure in dogs.

There are reports of increasing prevalence of renal failure in dogs. In spite of several advances in biomedical research, the management of kidney diseases remains a clinical challenge. Renal failure is often diagnosed late, when renal compensatory mechanisms have been overwhelmed, and severe parenchymal damage has occurred. Therefore, early diagnosis is extremely important to manage dogs with renal disorders. The present study evaluated the sensitivity and reliability of some clinical markers of kidney damage. Fifteen dogs, randomly assigned to two groups (A and B) of five and ten dogs each, were used for the study. The baseline values for kidney function and serum electrolytes were determined on day 0. Group B received gentamicin injections (100 mg/kg body weight) IV daily for 10 days, while group A dogs were given injection water placebo during the same period. Blood and urine samples were collected on days 3, 6, 9, and 12 for re-assay of the parameters. Dogs in group B had a significant (p < 0.05) increase in the levels of serum uric acid on day 3, serum urea on day 6, serum creatinine, serum phosphorus, and urine protein on day 9, potassium on day 12, and a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in the level of serum calcium on day 9. There was no significant difference (p > 0.05) in all the parameters in group A dogs. All biomarkers analyzed were reliable for the diagnosis of kidney damage in dogs. However, uric acid is the most sensitive. It is recommended that serum uric acid level should be assayed for prompt diagnosis of acute renal failure in dogs.
