PFAS-Exposition in Deutschland: Soziale Ungleichheiten und Herausforderungen für die Erfassung besonders betroffener Gruppen

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent chemicals that are used in many different ways, meaning that people around the world are exposed to them. This is also confirmed by the German Human Biomonitoring Program, which detected PFAS in all samples. The article examines the factors contributing to inequality in PFAS exposure based on German human biomonitoring data (socioeconomic status, education, age, gender, lifestyle factors) and investigates whether, contrary to the assumption of ubiquitous distribution, unequal distribution of risks can be found. Studies on health geography or environmental justice indicate that environmental burdens are often unequally distributed to the detriment of the poorer population. In the case of PFAS, however, human biomonitoring data show that the population with a higher socio-economic status (with higher income and better education) is more exposed. This is also attributed to lifestyle factors, such as the use of high-priced consumer products containing PFAS. This article further shows that a spatial analysis, which can provide a more detailed picture of inequalities in PFAS exposure, has so far been considered only to a limited extent in the German context. Often, it is point sources such as production sites or (military) airports that lead to exposures and, in turn, poorer sections of the population often live in their vicinity. Because the German Human Biomonitoring Program is intended to identify hazards and particularly exposed groups at an early stage, the article argues that taking spatial contamination data into account can help to make more comprehensive statements.
