摘要

The availability of goods and services is crucial to the attractiveness of residential locations. This becomes particularly apparent when important infrastructure is lacking. Equivalent (but not equal) living conditions in different settlement areas and for different age groups are a key principle of spatial planning. Increasingly, baby boomers born between 1955 and 1969 are retiring. Amenities close to home will then become important for quality of life.

This article focuses on what amenities baby boomers consider to be lacking in different residential areas and how this lack of amenities is related to their satisfaction with their residential area. To this end, open-ended responses to a semi-standardized survey conducted by the Department of Urban Sociology at RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau in seven model municipalities in 2022 are analysed.

The results show that restaurants, local shops, cultural facilities, and transportation services are often lacking in all residential areas. Rural areas are particularly poorly equipped compared with urban areas in terms of health care and leisure facilities. However, these gaps in services are less important for satisfaction with their residential area. Instead, meeting places and support services are the main factors that matter most here.
