<p>The state governments of Northern Germany have a&#xa0;common vision: they want to increasingly exploit their surplus of wind energy for the production of green hydrogen and its derivatives, thus playing a pioneering role in the energy transition across Europe. Particular potential is seen in the utilisation of offshore wind energy for electrolysis directly on the high sea. Although the development of the technologies is progressing steadily as a&#xa0;result of various research and business development programmes, and the establishment of a&#xa0;hydrogen economy is considered to be a&#xa0;major structural policy opportunity for Northern Germany, the topic has hardly made any impression on society to date. Experiences from other large infrastructure projects have shown that social acceptance can have a&#xa0;significant influence on implementation. Using as a&#xa0;case study the island of Helgoland, where plans for storing and handling green hydrogen produced offshore have been discussed, the local perception was examined using interviews and citizen surveys, and acceptance factors influencing the design of such processes for the energy transition were identified. It turns out that acceptance is less linked to the technology itself than to issues relating to procedural and distributional justice, transparent communication and knowledge sharing, as well as links to local identities and narratives.</p>
