Forschungsprojekt „Flussabwärts gerichtete Fischwanderung an mittelgroßen Fließgewässern in Österreich“ – zusammenfassende Bemerkungen

There is still a considerable need for research into downstream fish migration, especially with regard to overcoming obstacles such as hydroelectric power plants. This article summarises a FFG Collective Research research project that deals with the migration of potamodromous European fish species in medium-sized rivers and the effects of run-of-river power plants on their fish populations. Fish migrate upstream and downstream, whereby the downstream migration at hydroelectric power plants can take place via various routes such as fish ladders, weirs or turbines. In this project, the migratory movements were recorded telemetrically and the different preferred routes were determined. It was found that the main downstream migration routes lead over the turbines and fish ladders. The turbine passage of juvenile and adult fish was observed at two run-of-river power plants using the balloon tag method and the damage that occurred was recorded. In addition, knowledge of physical parameters such as pressure curves and pressure gradients, minimum pressures, but also rotations and accelerations is necessary to assess the turbine passage. These were recorded using a barotrauma detection system (BDS) and subsequently served as input for numerical computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and analytical blade strike calculations, as well as for experiments with live fish in a barotrauma chamber. All the recorded measurement results and calculated parameters served as input values for a age-class-based population model that ultimately allows conclusions to be drawn about the damage mechanisms involved when fish pass through run-of-river power plants.
