The quality of discharge measurements in rivers is crucial for flood protection, flood forecasting, and the assessment of water availability and its changes due to climate change. However, modern measuring devices and methods such as ADCP require different approaches to quality assurance compared to traditional methods and devices like the rotating-element current-meter. Often, standardized testing procedures are lacking, and there are challenges in ensuring data quality due to the complex operation and evaluation of modern measuring devices. To ensure the highest possible and internationally comparable data quality, it is essential to offer various quality assurance strategies and support ambitions in this area. National and international examples show how systematic and random errors can be identified through regular intercomparison measurements, and independent testing programs ensure the functionality of the devices. Continuous training and the exchange of experiences also significantly contribute to data quality by reducing operational errors. Modern measuring devices generate extensive datasets that can be effectively analysed through independent software solutions, thus contributing to further development. The creation of guidelines, as well as the standardization and institutionalization of intercomparison measurements and device testing programs, are also crucial to ensure consistent and reliable data quality. These strategies are essential to maintain the accuracy and comparability of discharge data at a high level in the future.
