Ökologische Analysen und Interpretation der Schwebstoffdaten des österreichischen Basismessnetzes

This paper presents a method for analyzing continuous suspended sediment data in terms of concentrations and duration of occurrence. The method was applied to 20 selected monitoring sites of the Austrian basic monitoring network, whereby the continuous mean suspended sediment concentrations over the cross-section over a period of 10 years were analyzed. The study demonstrated the high temporal and spatial variability of suspended sediment concentrations. The results were compared with target values for ecological impacts in terms of suspended sediment concentration and duration from the literature. Based on the analysis of 20 monitoring sites evaluated to date, target values set uniformly for all rivers and streams should be critically discussed and investigations should be carried out into the biological tolerance of elevated suspended sediment levels for native fish species.
