<p>The understanding of the genesis of rivers ought to be expanded by incorporating semi- and non-alluvial geomorphological processes. Such processes were driven particularly by glaciation during the Pleistocene, as well as by rockfall (colluvial processes) and solifluction (periglacial processes). These processes led in many places to diamictic sediments and a&#xa0;semi-alluvial river morphology. In the Holocene, rivers either covered these deposits with fluvial sediments in sedimentary terranes and transport limited drainages, or incised into them, exposing non- and semi-alluvial deposits, especially in post-glacial supply limited drainages. These processes have significant and previously overlooked implications for the understanding of the genesis, morphology, and sediment composition of many rivers in post-glacial landscapes—and thus for river utilization, ecology, restoration, and river management. A&#xa0;new Nordic river typology in Norway and Sweden aims to make these findings applicable through a&#xa0;practical mapping method.</p>
